Curriculum update

A curriculum offers teachers a guideline for assessing student progress in addition to giving students an understanding of what is required in order to obtain a degree or any other qualification. Curriculum must not be static; it must be constantly changing according to changing needs and demands of the society. Thus the updated curricula must fulfill the needs of the society. For this purpose educators must evaluate the curricula and try to update it every 4 years. Although it’s commonly known that curricula should be updated every four years, in Lebanon the last update was done in 1999 (15 years ago). Having suitable curricula will help the teacher as well as the students to achieve more and have a higher performance. Educators must evaluate curricula and write recommendations that enable them to enhance the book in order to meet students’ needs. Thus criticizing any book is very important and allows educators to know the good and the weak points, so that they can enhance the good points and work on the weak points to fulfill students’ needs.

  1. The successful implementation of any curriculum involves thoughtful planning and hard work on many levels. Teachers should not follow curriculum blindly, they should plan well the learning objectives and the standards they want their students to reach. In our country Lebanon the curriculum had not been changed for a long period and this is one of the problems as teachers we will face, where we know that many criteria should be changes but we don’t have the permission to do so. In my opinion to solve this problem the teachers should not cover everything in the book, the teachers themselves should be up to date. As teachers we should modify the curriculum to be meet the needs of the students and their abilities.

  2. When we read students book, we notice that there are many lessons that are hard and convincing for them, and even the teacher know this but because it’s included in the curriculum, they insist that they must learn it. For example in the national educational book the student should memorize some vocabulary words related to the law and elections in lower levels instead to learning about values and environmental issues.
