For many people, the word germ and microbe bring to mind a group of tiny creatures that are harmful to our body. We usually tend to associate microbes with diseases or infections, however some microbes are beneficial. In our body there are beneficial microbes at the level of the large intestine hat help in food digestion anhd of them help in the production of vitamins K and B. Good microbes live in association with human body, they protect against harmful microbes, this is ensured by competition. God microbes will take nutrients and required condition of life depriving the bad microbes from them, this decreases the chance of infection. In case of taking antibiotics, these harmful microbes will die. This will lead to problems in digestion, deficiency in vitamins K and B, and sometimes bleeding. Thus some microbes which are the tiny creatures that cannot be seen by naked eye may help our body in doing its job in a good way.
I have always heard this misconception of microbes. We associate them with disease and even sometimes we use them as an adjective to describe certain persons. I think there should be an awareness about this topic and its Advantages.
ReplyDeleteMany microbiology studies have shown that only a small fraction of microbes are involved in disease; many other microbes actually enhance our well being. This fact has surprised me I thought that all microbes are harmful. Actually the harmless microbes that live in our bodies help us fight off disease. Not only that but also it provides needed vitamins, such as B12 . They contribute to our overall health. So such microbes are much more our friends than our enemies
ReplyDeleteThat's true Shaikha we tend to use the term microbes in negative way but they are tiny creatures having a lot of benefits and without their presence we might suffer from a lot of diseases.
ReplyDeleteKinana I notice that most of the people get surprised when I tend to tell them that microbes are not all classified as pathogens (disease causing micro-organisms) but some have a lot of benefits in humans and in the environment.
That's right farah, E coli and other microbes form what we call the normal flora which are the good microbes for our body. The absence of such microbes code for a side effects in the body that in later levels code for death. So its necessary to aware people that not all microbes are harmful and that body cant make its job functionally in their absence.
ReplyDeleteAs a throwback from the microbiology class which was interesting, i can remember that microbes can be either good or bad. But the world of microbes is very important for the survival of the Earth. The defense system in our intestines include probiotics that are good microbes. I searched a lot for this topic when i was doing my senior. Probiotics ward off bad microbes that make us sick and promote the health of our digestive systems.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Farah, because microbes live in, on, and around us all the time and as research shows these contributes approximately to 2 kilograms to our mass.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, most of these are essential to our health and live in equilibrium with our bodies. Yes there are harmful effects of certain microorganisms such as diseases and food spoilage but there are too many beneficial effects.
They are ecologically important in maintaining balance in the environment by recycling chemical elements like carbon and nitrogen between soil, organism, and atmosphere. Also, they are used in many industrial and commercial applications to produce food, chemicals, drugs, to treat sewage, control pests, and clean up pollutant.
I'd like to add that all of the microbes in our body are good microbes, however if the microbial position changed by accident then it becomes harmful. So, as you said Ammar, E. coli is good microbe however if transferred to place other than the one it should be on it becomes harmful.
thats true Farah most of the people have misconception since they don't distinguish between whats good and whats bad in microbes. what make things worst is that sick people tend to take antibiotic without doctor's permission and some times some doctor give antibiotic without paying attention to the bad consequences of antibiotics on life of humans in general. thats why we as knowledge people we must inform who don't know about bad effects of antibiotics
ReplyDeleteRight example e.coli wouldn't exactly be classed as harmless guys, its good for your gut but if it spreads to other parts of the body it can make you seriously ill. therefore we should know everything the positive side and the negative also in order to be healthy and safe.
